As you and your dentures age, they can begin to lose that secure fit they once had. This occurs because not only do your dentures change shape, but so too can your arches. If you notice even a slight change in the shape or comfort of your prosthetic, it’s time to make an appointment with your dentist. Until you can be seen, a temporary fix like denture adhesive can help hold them in place. Here’s a breakdown of some popular types, and how to use them correctly.
How to Choose a Denture Adhesive
Denture adhesives are a great way to provide an added layer of security when keeping your prosthetics in place. Be aware, however, that they should only be used temporarily. That’s because many contain zinc, which can be absorbed by the gums. While this is usually fine in small doses, prolonged use can make you sick. Beyond that, the exact type of denture adhesive you choose is largely a matter of personal preference. Here’s a little more about each.
Denture Adhesive Strips
Denture adhesive strips have one of the easiest application methods. Because they are already performed, you don’t need to do much to use them. Simply cut or tear them into the shape you need, moisten, and apply:
- Clean your dentures and dry them completely.
- With clean, dry hands, peel the adhesive strips from the packaging, wetting each one you’ll be using with regular tap water.
- Attach one strip at a time but be careful to avoid touching the edges of your denture or overlapping the strips.
- Rinse your mouth with water, and press your denture into place, holding it firmly and biting down.
Denture Adhesive Cream
Denture cream might be the easiest adhesive to use. Simply squeeze a small amount onto your prosthetic and place it in your mouth. Be careful not to overdo it though, as too much cream will overflow over the edges of your prosthetic and make a sticky mess! To use:
- Clean and completely dry your dentures.
- Squeeze a small amount of cream directly on the inside of your denture in short strips. Be careful not to get any on the edges.
- Rinse your mouth with water.
- Press the denture in place in your mouth and hold it firmly for several seconds.
Denture Adhesive Powder
Denture adhesive powder is an excellent choice for patients with dexterity issues. Because you don’t need a lot to get a good hold, it can also be more economical than other products. Here’s how to use it correctly:
- Clean your dentures well but leave them wet.
- Spray your denture adhesive powder lightly and evenly on all the surfaces of your prosthetic that will contact your gums and the roof of your mouth.
- Moisten your mouth with water.
- Gently shake off any loose adhesive powder from your denture.
- Place the denture in your mouth and bite down on it to secure it in place.
Cleaning Adhesive Off Your Dentures
Remember, denture adhesive isn’t permanent, and it will need to be completely removed after each use. To remove dentures treated with adhesive from your mouth, simply swish some warm water and then gently pull the dentures out. Place them somewhere safe, and with a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste, remove any remaining adhesive from your gums and any remaining teeth.
Now it’s time to remove the adhesive from your dentures. Using a second soft-bristled toothbrush, gently scrub the entire denture using mild hand soap or denture cleanser. Floss between each tooth and rinse the prosthetic well before submerging it in a glass of water or denture soak until you’re ready to wear it again.
Remember, your dentures were custom made to fit your mouth perfectly. If they ever stop, you can use a product like denture adhesive to temporarily hold them in place until you can be seen by your dentist. But don’t delay, as adhesives weren’t meant to be used long-term, and having a well-fitting, complete denture is essential for helping you eat, speak, and smile.
